"TANKER DESK"

CURRENT PROJECT: WORK IN PROGRESS

This is the tale of a 2900 Series mid-century modern design, General Fireproofing Desk, built in 1959.

Various sources attribute the design of the "Tanker desk" or the General Fireproofing metal desk to different designers. While Gilbert Rohde is often credited with designing the original "tanker desk" in the 1940s, other sources mention George Nelson in later iterations or designs of metal desks.

The General Fireproofing Companies iconic "Tanker Desk" is renowned for its durability, functionality, and aesthetic, this desk gained popularity since its inception in the 1940s.

Sadly, this particular desk was left to weather and deteriorate in the barn of a storied cattle ranch, until fate directed a collector of mid-century modern furniture to stumble upon it. Unable to bear witness to its degradation, the collector sold it to Motorzooi who envisioned its potential.

The desk had endured significant damage, with signs of age and rust claiming its surface and features. Yet, like a proud warrior, its scars represented a unique story. Many of these wounds, worn as badges of honor, embraced its transformation. Preserving these battle scars became integral in recounting its history. Ultimately, when finished this desk will retain the functional utility at its core, paying homage to the legacy of its designer(s); and through its current reincarnation, it will stand as a compelling work of art as recreated by Motorzooi Art Works.
